Sunday Supper Sandwiches

It was a very Happy Sunday today...
our beautiful friend Clara celebrated her 80th birthday
After church MrD and I, Clara, her husband Henry, their granddaughter Betty and great grandchildren Ronnie and Joanie had a lovely lunch at the Maple Leaf Family Restraunt in town
On the way back to their house.. MrD and I stopped at our house to pick up the cake I made yesterday which I had left in our refrigerator... because the weather was so hot.. and luckily the mocha icing had firmed up beautifully.  We all enjoyed a slice to celebrate this lovely ladies special day
After all the lovely food we had today.. we only needed a very light supper to get us through til tomorrow. The aptly named Sunday Supper Sandwiches from Better Homes and Gardens Magazine July1941. fit the bill perfectly. Very easy to make.. and is basically a tuna fish and cheese toasted sandwich... and the added pickle gave a bit of a tang. I made no changes.. except next time I will probably toast the bun first to make the bread a bit firmer. Very nice.. especially with some fresh chunks of cucumber and radishes from the garden!

Porch Breakfast

Even though its Saturday MrD and I were still up before 6am. We were expecting really high temperatures again and we were determined to beat the heat. MrD said he'd had a six hour lie in anyway!
After a quick coffee and blueberry muffin.. MrD got straight outside and started running a new irrigation line to the avocado tree as it wasn't getting enough water in this heat. He is so clever. We just have to turn on one tap  (we have a few) and one part of the garden gets watered... and we can get on with other things. This water line is on the same circuit as the side flower beds... which are always thirsty
So for brunch we tried a recipe from Marie Holmes at the Toronto Star on 21 May 1941. Porch Breakfast is actually just bacon sandwiches.... with marmalade
And who knew that adding marmalade to a toasted bun and back bacon would be so tasty!! And of course we ate it outside

Marie states, “if you have a verandah suitably placed, why not serve breakfast there?”... “there is quite a difference between a breakfast that is rushed, and one eaten leaisurely”

And of course... she was quite right.
